The ELIXIR Method

One method, from the first question to the last refinement.

Every ELIXIR project moves through the same five phases. Each one answers a question, and each one leaves you with something concrete before the next begins.

[ WHY ONE METHOD ]

The same five phases, whatever we build.

A website, an AI feature and a business-wide change are different kinds of work. The way we approach them doesn't change: understand first, decide before building, and keep refining once it's live.

  • 01

    One method across every service

All ten ELIXIR services follow the same five phases, so the way we work stays the same from one project to the next.

  • 02

Scoped to the work, not packaged

How much each phase involves depends on the project. The phases give it a shape; they aren't a fixed package.

  • 03

    Continuity from start to finish

Each phase builds on the one before it, so what was understood at the start still guides what gets refined at the end.

[ THE FIVE PHASES ]

What each phase answers, and what it leaves you with.

Five phases, in order. Each has one question to answer and one thing to hand over before the work moves on.

Phase 01 of 05

DISCERN

See what matters before you build.

The question
What problem are we actually solving?
What you leave with
A clear statement of the problem worth solving, and the context around it.
  • Context before assumptions.
  • The opportunity, named plainly.
  • Clarity before a single line of code.

Phase 02 of 05

DEFINE

Give the vision a direction.

The question
What should the work do, and in what order?
What you leave with
A defined scope: priorities ranked, the system's logic set out, and what the first release must do.
  • Priorities ranked, not just listed.
  • The logic the system will run on.
  • Direction measured, not implied.

Phase 03 of 05

DESIGN

Shape the experience before the code.

The question
How will people use it?
What you leave with
The experience and the structure behind it, designed and agreed before it is built.
  • Interaction mapped before interface.
  • An interface worth trusting.
  • Experience, engineered on purpose.

Phase 04 of 05

DEVELOP

Turn the designed system into reality.

The question
How do we build it so it holds?
What you leave with
A working, production-ready system, built on the design and ready for real use.
  • Engineering built to hold weight.
  • Intelligence where it earns its place.
  • Infrastructure that doesn't flinch at scale.

Phase 05 of 05

DISTILL

Keep what matters. Remove the rest.

The question
What should stay, and what should go?
What you leave with
A refined system, simpler where it can be, and a clear view of what to improve next.
  • Complexity, refined into clarity.
  • Simplicity as the final feature.
  • A system built to keep evolving.

[ WHERE IT STARTS ]

It starts with the audit.

Discern is where every project begins, and the audit is where Discern begins: you tell us what isn't working, and we look at it before recommending anything. The other four phases follow from what that first look shows.

[ FAQ ]

What people ask about the Method.

01

What is the ELIXIR Method?

It is the way ELIXIR runs every project, in five phases: Discern, Define, Design, Develop and Distill. Each phase answers one question and leaves you with something concrete before the next begins.

02

Do all projects follow the same five phases?

Yes. Every project moves through the same five phases in the same order. What changes is how much each one involves, which depends on the scope of the work.

03

Can phases overlap?

They follow each other in order, but the edges aren't rigid: design questions can surface while defining, and refinement can start on one part of a system while another is still being built. Each phase still finishes with its own outcome.

04

Does the Method apply to every service?

Yes. All ten ELIXIR services follow it, and each service page shows the five phases applied to that service's own kind of work.

05

What happens during Discern?

We work out what problem is actually being solved and the context around it. It usually starts with the audit, where you describe what isn't working and we look at it before recommending anything.

06

Where does refinement happen?

In Distill, the fifth phase: once a system is in real use, we keep what serves, simplify what doesn't and set out what to improve next.

07

Is the Method a fixed package with a fixed price?

No. The phases give every project the same shape, but the scope of each one is set per project. The audit comes first, and it leads to a scoped plan.

Start with Discern: tell us what isn't working.

The audit is the first step of the Method. We'll look at the problem before we recommend anything.
